Natural Alexandrite is very rare, and valuable. It has the rare property of changing colour from green in natural daylight, to either red, mauve, or brown under incandescent light, such as a light bulb. Because natural Alexandrite is so rare, there is a lot of synthetic, or imitation Alexandrite available which has a very strong purple to mauve/red colour change, but it is man made, and therefore not valuable.
